Information On Italian Pottery
Some info on Italian Pottery:

The ceramics we import are defined as Majolica. To be considered as such, an item must be made of European red clay. After the item dries and is fired the first time, it is dipped in a white, chalky coating over which the design is painted entirely freehand with lead-free mineral glazes; it is then fired again to bring out the colors of the various minerals. The finished product is Majolica.

Production of Italian Majolica began around 1350 using simple techniques and limited patterns and colors. Through the years, with improvements in kilns and glazes, the patterns and colors have become more and more elaborate. Italian Ceramics found their peak in the 15th and 16th centuries when they became used in religious houses, pharmacies, secular houses, and as tableware for the aristocracy, and as designs were adopted from the work of famous Italian artists such as Raphael and Luca della Robbia.

Today, Italian artisans continue to produce beautiful ceramics with the techniques that have been handed down through the centuries. Each piece is handmade and hand painted and reflects the skilled craftsmanship of the artisans as well as a rich history of Italian ceramics.

After repeated use, majolica tends to "craze". This is when tiny cracks form in the glaze. Crazing has no effect on the durability of an item and can be decreased by avoiding drastic temperature change and by handwashing.

All pieces are completely food and dishwasher safe. Not recommended for use in the microwave.

Use & Care of Our Products

All Dinnerware, Serving ware, and Kitchenware from Cutalia International are guaranteed to be 100% food safe in compliance with FDA standards and U.S.A. import regulations for lead and cadium.

Large decorative pieces and not meant to have contact with food unless otherwise specified.

Majolica pottery is dishwasher safe, but we recommend hand washing. If you choose to use your dishwasher, use the “fine china” or low energy setting, with low heat. Be sure to place the ceramic items with enough space in between them to avoid hitting each other during the dishwashing cycle.

Majolica should not be used in the microwave or conventional oven, unless otherwise specified. Putting them in the oven/microwave will heat up the ceramic and heighten the possibility of cracking or chipping.

With repeated use, majolica has a tendency to “craze” (form tiny lines in the glaze). This has no effect on the durability of the item. However, there are ways to minimize crazing and to help keep your ceramics looking beautiful. Here are some tips:

Avoid sudden temperature changes. You can run dishes under warm tap water before serving very hot foods or liquids. You can also place a metal spoon in your ceramic mug or teapot when pouring in hot liquid. The metal will absorb the heat and thus protect against crazing or cracking. Avoid using scouring powders or harsh scourers as they can damage the glaze. For east clean up, let item soak with warm soapy water for a few minutes then wash with cloth, sponge, or plastic scrubber. Remove tea or coffee stains in cups with a solution of 2 tablespoons chlorine bleach per quart of water. Soak for 1-2 minutes and rinse promptly. Black marks left by tarnished cutlery can be removed from pottery with a good quality, non abrasive metal cleaner. With a little extra care, your majolica will remain strong and beautiful for a very long time. We hope you enjoy using them.
